Helping Your Cat Stay Cool

August 1, 2022

Summer can be a dangerous time for our feline pals. Fluffy can’t cool off very easily if she overheats, so she can be in big trouble if she gets too hot. Here, a Middletown, DE vet offers a few tips on helping your kitty stay cool.

Water

Make sure Fluffy always has fresh water! You may want to get her a fountain: many cats prefer drinking running water. You can drop an ice cube into your feline friend’s dish on hot days. Put one beside it, too: your cat may enjoy playing ‘pawkey.’

Cool Treats

Cold snacks are wonderfully refreshing on scorching days. Fluffy may enjoy a chilled bowl of sodium-free broth. You can also keep some squeezable cat treats in the freezer for her. Another option is to pour some tuna juice over shaved ice, or mix it with ice and canned cat food in a blender.

Weight Control

Did you know that over half of our furry pals are obese? That extra weight is very bad for your kitty’s health! It will also make it even harder for her to cope with the heat. Keep Fluffy at or near her ideal weight.

Grooming

Brushing Fluffy regularly can go a long way towards keeping her comfortable in extreme weather, especially if she has long fur. That dead hair and dander interferes with the natural insulating qualities of her coat, so removing it will help keep her cool and comfy. There’s also a pretty good chance that this will get your furry buddy’s little motor going. As we all know, kitties absolutely love being pampered!

Cool Beds

Fluffy usually doesn’t have much trouble finding herself comfy spots to sleep in. However, she will appreciate having a cool spot when temperatures soar. One option is to make your kitty a hammock bed. All you need to do is cut a piece of fabric into a square or rectangle, and then attach the corners to the legs of a table. You can also give your feline buddy a frozen towel to sleep on.

Keep Kitty In

The best way to protect Fluffy from the heat? Keep her inside, in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioning. This will also protect her from hazards such as cars, weather, and parasites.
