It’s Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! Are you adopting a shelter dog? Congratulations! We love seeing shelter dogs getting second chances. Of course, before bringing Fido home, you’ll need to pick up some supplies. In this article, a Middletown, DE vet lists some things to put on your shopping list.

Toys

Toys serve a variety of functions for our canine pals. Some toys are comforting to dogs, others are pure entertainment, and some, like puzzle toys, just help keep Fido occupied and out of mischief. Pick up a variety, and pay attention to what your pup likes best.

Bedding

A comfy bed will definitely help your pooch feel safe and comfy. Some of our canine companions prefer certain types of beds, but this isn’t something to lose sleep over right now. Food & Treats

Otherwise, a regular brush should be fine. You’ll also need shampoo, towels, pet wipes, paw balm, doggy dental supplies, and nail clippers.

Leash & Collar

Make sure to get a good, sturdy leash. This is very important! Fido may have quirks and phobias you don’t know about yet. If he lunges after a squirrel, you want to make sure the leash won’t snap. Collars are fine for most dogs, but some pooches should wear harnesses instead. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Dishes

Don’t forget to get your four-legged pal a great dinnerware set! Larger dogs will be more comfortable eating out of raised dishes.
