Earth Day With Pets

April 15, 2021

Earth Day is coming up on April 24. Of course, your animal companion may just give you an adorable confused look if you try to explain the importance of this day of observation. But that doesn’t mean you can’t include your pet in some earth-friendly activities. A Middletown, DE veterinarian lists some possible options below.

Repurpose

Many of the things you may have sitting unused in your storage unit, attic, or cellar can be turned into things for pets. An old stepladder can find new life as a cat tower. Or, you can make Fluffy a kitty bed out of an old drawer, suitcase, or hatbox. Fido may enjoy a pallet bed. There are also lots of great ideas for homemade toys you can make your furry pal. Look online for ideas and instructions.

Cooking

One way to celebrate and honor the earth would be to start using more local, sustainable ingredients for cooking. Why not make some homemade pet food or treats? Head to a farmer’s market or a local grocery store, and grab some pet-friendly ingredients made nearby. Some things that you may want to pick up include honey, sweet potatoes, spinach, fish, and poultry.

Plants

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than by planting something? If you have a garden, opt for something that is safe, and ideally, healthy for your pet. The ASPCA has a full list of safe and unsafe options online here.

Cleaning

One small change that can make a big difference is reducing the amount of chemicals in your home. Opt for eco-friendly products when choosing things like detergents and cleaning agents. Many of these work really well, smell great, and don’t cost much more than traditional brands.

Shopping

Choosing non-toxic cleaners isn’t the only thing you can do to make sure your product choices are earth-friendly. If possible, look into buying in bulk. This reduces packaging and shipping costs. Also, pick up some microfiber towels, and use those for cleaning, rather than paper towels.

Adopt

Are you ready to bring a new pet into your life? Look at the available pets that local rescues and shelters have posted. You may also want to consider donating some of the things your pet doesn’t use.
