Celebrating National Bird Day With Chickens

May 1, 2021

May 4th is National Bird Day! One of our feathered friends is enjoying quite a bit of popularity as a backyard pet. More and more people are keeping chickens. This is a win-win for both you and Clucky: you get fresh eggs, and Clucky gets to live her best life. Why not pamper your birds a bit? A local Middletown, DE vet lists some cute ways to do that below.

Xylophone

Chickens naturally peck to try and find their food. It’s a quick step for them to start pecking at keyboards. Get your birds a piano or xylophone to play with. Just be warned: your birds may not be the best musicians around.

“Chicknic” Table

This is an easy project for handy types. Get your winged buddies a little picnic table to eat on. You can close the top in with a border to keep food from spilling.

Swings

Chickens are pretty entertaining to watch. Do both your birds and your future self a favor, and get your birds a swing or two to perch on. This can make for some great photos!

Redecorating

Who says that your coop has to be plain and drab? Give yours a makeover. A fresh coat of paint will do wonders. Adding things like window boxes and custom signs will really make it look cute. You can even add a few pieces of art to the coop.

Predator Protection

No matter where you live, you’ll need to be on the lookout for predators. This is one area where you can’t be too careful. Take a look at the floor of your coop. If something could dig under it, then add some wire fencing and rocks for additional protection.

Treats

One thing all of our patients have in common is a love of treats. Offer your birds something special. Many types of kitchen scraps are fine, but ask your vet for more information.

Name Game

While not everyone wants to name their birds, if you do want to give them monikers, have some fun with it. Movies, books, and history all offer lots of inspiration. You can even name them after the characters of your favorite show or movie! The Brady Bunch, Friends, Schitt’s Creek, and other ensemble casts are perfect choices!
