Senior Cat Care Tips

October 15, 2020

Is your feline pal aged nine or older? If so, Fluffy is an official kitty retiree, ready to trade in her career of napping and looking cute for a more relaxed schedule of napping and looking cute. Your furry pal will need some extra care as she ages, however. A Galena, MD vet offers some senior cat care tips below.

Beds

Older cats are absolute masters of snoozing, and can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Fluffy will need lots of beds to keep up her skills. These don’t have to be fancy: most kitties are just as happy with a folded-up blanket as with an expensive pet store-bought bed.

Playtime

Your feline friend may not be the same frisky, mischievous ball of fur she was as a kitten, but she’ll still enjoy–and benefit from–regular play sessions. Try to play with Fluffy every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. The activity and mental stimulation are both great for her!

Safety

Keep your furry buddy indoors! Fluffy won’t be as quick as she once was. She may have trouble running or climbing to get away from hazards. Older cats are also at increased risk of getting lost.

Food

Obesity is quite common in older cats. We know, Fluffy looks adorable if she’s a bit chubby. However, extra weight can put her at risk of developing some very serious issues. It can even shorten her lifespan!

Don’t let your furball become a butterball.

Veterinary Care

Fluffy will benefit from more frequent appointments in her golden years. Regular exams will allow your vet–and therefore, you–to stay on top of any changes or developments that could indicate medical problems. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Kitty Comforts

Take a look around your home, and see what you can do to make it more comfortable for your cat. Make sure Fluffy’s litterbox is in a quiet place that is easy for her to access. Things like nightlights and pet ramps will also make life easier for your furry friend.

Love

Finally, it’s also important to just pay attention to Fluffy. Make sure she feels loved and safe! Talk to her, pet her, and pamper her with toys, catnip, and (limited) treats.
