Thanksgiving With Fido

November 1, 2020

Thanksgiving is coming up quick! We are definitely thankful for our canine companions. Fido will definitely be right there with you as you celebrate the autumn holiday. Just like any other holiday, Thanksgiving can be dangerous for pets, so you’ll want to take a few steps to keep your furry buddy safe. Here, a veterinarian Galena, MD discusses spending Turkey Day with your pup.

Guests

If you’re hosting this year’s celebration, Fido will likely let you know when people are arriving. Give your canine pal a good bath before the celebration, so your visitors can be greeted by a clean, soft pup. We also recommend dusting and vacuuming thoroughly.

Food

Your canine buddy will definitely appreciate a special treat! Fido can have some of that delicious turkey. Only give your pup plain, cooked meat with the skin, bones, and fat removed. Never give your pet garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; grapes, currants, or raisins; chocolate; alcohol; meat on the bone; raw meat, dough, or yeast; and anything that contains xylitol. Keep in mind that your guests may not be aware of what dogs can and can’t have. In order to avoid awkward—and potentially dangerous—situations, ask visitors not to feed your pooch without checking with you first.

Petiquette

Dogs are wonderful friends and companions, but they aren’t perfect. If your pooch has some bad manners, such as begging or jumping on people, put him in a quiet room during dinner or as people are arriving. Use a baby gate instead of closing the door, so your furry pal doesn’t feel lonely or isolated. The long term solution, of course, is to work on teaching Fido better manners.

Safety

Keep Fido in mind as you decorate. Put things like candles and potpourri burners in high, secure spots, well out of paw’s reach. If you light a fire in the fireplace, use a heavy grate. We also recommend using a trash can that closes securely. Fido has been known to go through the trash in search of leftovers. This can be quite dangerous!

Tail Wags

Dogs are definitely something we appreciate! Spend some quality time with your furry friend. Taking Fido for a long walk after dinner is a great way to work off some of that delicious feast!

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Galena Animal Medical Clinic, your veterinary clinic Galena, MD. Please contact us anytime!
