Things To Consider Before Adopting A Parrot

Are you considering adopting a parrot? These bold, charismatic birds are full of charm and personality. However, they need a lot of love and care! Here, a Middletown, DE vet lists some things to consider before adopting Polly. 

Habitat

First and foremost, Polly will need a great cage. This isn’t going to be something you can fit on your desk. Parrots need plenty of room to climb and play! You’ll also need to provide toys and perches, which should be rotated regularly. Keeping the cage clean is also crucial.

Care

A proper diet is of course crucial, but caring for your colorful friend doesn’t end there. Polly will need ongoing care, which entails things like nail trims, baths, and veterinary care. You’ll also need to watch for any potential signs of illness. Be prepared to do a lot of research! You’ll also want to ask your vet for specific care tips. 

Longevity

Some of our feathered friends can live 50 years or even longer. That’s definitely something to think about, especially when taking into consideration the fact that birds become very attached to their owners, and may become depressed and anxious if rehomed, which unfortunately happens much too often.

Quality Time

We can’t overstate how much attention parrots need. Polly will become sad, lonely, and distressed if she just sits in her cage all the time! Your winged pal needs lots of time outside of her cage to play, sing, dance, make funny noises, and just hang out with you. 

Habitat

Your feathered buddy will need a safe, suitable environment. Birdproofing is a big part of that, but you’ll also need to make sure that your pet isn’t exposed to toxic fumes or other potential dangers. There’s also your own habitat to consider. Polly isn’t the neatest roommate around!

Safety

Parrots can be extremely lovable, but, like any animal, they may lash out if they feel scared, threatened, unhappy, or even if they are in pain. Polly has a sharp beak and talons. 

Noise

It can be fun—not to mention highly entertaining—having a pet that imitates your car alarm or belts out Abba songs as you’re making dinner. However, if you prefer a quiet home, a parrot may not be the best option.
