DIY Pet Memorials

September 1, 2021

September 13th is World Pet Memorial Day. If you love animals, there’s a good chance that you’ve at some point been through the heartbreaking loss of having to say goodbye to a beloved pet. There’s no easy way to fill the holes our furry friends leave behind, but there are some very sweet ways to honor their memories. Read on as a Middletown, DE vet lists some great ways to memorialize a cherished animal companion.

Gardens

Gardens and plants can make beautiful living memorials. Plant a tree, flower, or shrub in honor of your animal friend. You can also add a memorial stone to an existing garden.

Ceramics

Painting pottery is another wonderful memorial option. You don’t have to go too crazy: you can just put your pet’s name, and perhaps some pawprints, on a chosen piece. You can also do this with a vase, crock, bowl, or plant pot.

Scrapbooks

Scrapbooking has become very popular in recent years. It’s a very customizable option, as there are so many styles, colors, and materials to choose from. Include things like pictures, adoption records, and written memories, along with a few mementos, such as a collar or favorite toy.

Photo Collections

There are several ways to do this. You can print out some of your favorites, and collect them in a photo album. You can also make a collage. Another option is to get a digital photo frame, which will cycle through whatever pictures you upload.

Portrait

Photo editing software has come quite a long way. Why not turn a beloved picture into a watercolor or stencil? Experiment with different options, and print and frame your favorite.

Art

Are you a creative type? Write a song, story, or poem about your furry friend. Or, draw a sketch or portrait from a favorite picture. This is also a great way for kids to cope with the loss of a family pet.

Donations

We know how heartbreaking it is to say goodbye to a furry friend. However, while you may not be ready for a new pet yet, you may find helping homeless animals can be very healing. Consider donating money or supplies to a local animal shelter, or volunteering your time.

If you’re recently lost a pet, please accept our deepest condolences. All of us here at Galena, your Middletown, DE animal clinic, have pawprints on our hearts as well.
