Holidays With Sugar Gliders

December 1, 2022

Happy Holidays! You’ll see lots of information about spending the holidays with Fluffy and Fido, but what about little animals? Sugar gliders are part of the family, too! A local Middletown, DE vet offers some holiday care tips for sugar gliders in this article.

Decorations

If you love sugar gliders, why not incorporate them into your holiday décor? You can find sugar glider ornaments, stockings, and ornaments. You can even get your tiny buddies their own stockings, complete with sugar gliders!

Travel

Are you traveling for the holidays? There are a few things to consider before deciding whether or not to take your gliders with you. Sugars are very sociable, and do best with buddies. If you only have one, the little guy will be quite lonely by themself, even if you have someone stop over. On the other hand, travel can be stressful for our furry friends. You’ll also need to make sure that their accommodations are safe. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.

Petsitting

If you get a petsitter, do all you can to take any guesswork out of the equation. One thing you can do in advance is portion out meals, and write the dates on them. We also recommend that you print out some basic information about caring for flying furballs, such as safe and unsafe foods, signs of potential illness, and your vet’s number.

Trees

Christmas trees and sugar gliders are definitely not a safe mix. Christmas trees, both real and artificial, have very sharp needles that can injure your little friends. Tinsel, ornaments, ribbons, and lights also pose serious risks for these guys. Keep your adorable pets in a separate room.

Gifts

Don’t forget to pick up something for your flying pals! Your little buddies may enjoy some new swings or pouches. If you really want to spoil them, make them a climbing wall.

Treats

Want to give your gliders a special treat? That’s fine: just stick with things you know are safe, such as eucalyptus or organic dried fruits. Don’t go overboard with sugary foods! Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Charities

For many people, giving back is a big part of the holiday season. There are plenty of sugar glider charities and rescues that could use some extra help. Consider donating to one of them.
