Hug Your Cat Day

June 1, 2021

Kitties, start your engines: June 4th is Hug Your Cat Day. We think that cats should be hugged every day, but that doesn’t mean Fluffy won’t appreciate some extra TLC on this special occasion. In this article, a Middletown, DE vet offers some tips on hugging your feline pal.

Be Gentle

Fluffy may think of herself as a lion, but at the end of the day she’s very small and fragile. Be very careful! Make sure to hold your furry buddy properly, and put her down gently when hug time is over. This goes double for senior cats and kitties with health problems.

Abide Fluffy’s Wishes

One of the biggest rules of hugging kitties is that the furball always gets to decide when cuddle time is over. Of course, that may be thirteen seconds after it starts, or several hours after Fluffy first snuggled up on your lap … you just never know with cats.

Hug Kittens Frequently

If your feline buddy is still a baby, you’ll need to give her extra hugs. This is very important for socializing little Fluffy. In fact, you should have friends and family members come over just to hug and play with your tiny ball of fur. (You probably won’t have a very hard time enlisting help on this one.) Socialization will help your kitten learn to view strange people in a positive light, and help her grow into a friendly, well-behaved (at least some of the time), adult cat.

Don’t Forget Cats That Need Hugs

Unfortunately, not every kitty has a human to hug her, pet her, and offer lap space and catnip. There are many homeless pets out there in shelters, just hoping someone will adopt them and love them. Help them out by sharing information about adoptable cats. Donations are another great way to help.

Never Force A Hug

Kitties can be a bit opinionated. Fluffy may enjoy being hugged one day, and then refuse to let you hold her the next. Never force a cat to submit to being hugged if she isn’t in the mood. That could mar your relationship with your furry pal. (It could also get you scratched.)

Savor The Moment

There are few things more relaxing than hugging a purring cat. Enjoy this special time with your feline friend!
