Tips For Adopting A Rescued Bird

January 15, 2022

January is Adopt A Rescued Bird Month! We’re more than happy to help spread the word about this wonderful cause. If you’re considering bringing a new feathered friend into your home, read on! A Galena, MD vet offers some tips on adopting a rescued bird below.

Research

Birds are wonderful pets, but they aren’t right for everyone. Do lots of research! Look into all aspects of your winged pal’s care, including feeding, cage setup, and training. Consider both the pros and the cons of bird adoption. For instance, if you have three cats, bringing a bird into your home will require a lot more ‘catculating’ and separation than if Polly will be an only pet.

Choose The Right Bird

Polly’s breed won’t just affect her appearance and behavior: it’s also a big factor on how loud she is, how long she’ll live, and her care needs. Finches and parrots are very, very different! Do some breed-specific research as well.

Get A Great Cage

Polly will spend a lot of time in her cage, so you want to make sure it’s comfortable and fun for her. Get the biggest cage you can afford! Given that the cage is a one-time expense, it’s worth your while to get one with bells and whistles. Keep in mind that different types of birds need different cage styles. (Tip: choose the cage’s location and measure that space before going shopping. That way, you’ll know how much room you have to work with.)

Birdproof

Many common household items are dangerous to birds. That list includes fans, window treatments, candles, mirrors, and fireplaces, and toxins, to name just a few. Small or sharp objects are also a concern, as are things like kitchen utensils, full sinks or toilets, and plastic objects. You’ll also need to make sure Polly isn’t exposed to any fumes. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Visit The Doctor

Speaking of veterinarians, one of the first things you’ll want to do is take Polly to the vet for a thorough exam. Don’t be afraid to ask for care tips!

Give Polly Time

Birds get very, very attached to their owners, but that bond doesn’t form overnight. Polly will need time to learn to trust you. Be patient and gentle, and don’t force things.
